I am about the same experience level as you as far as card magic goes.I have the Paper Engine, and it is brilliant. Aaron Fisher really knows what he's talking about. That being said, some of the moves are seriously difficult. Like, really difficult. I would still say buy it, but just know that it contains some knuckle-busting moves. Also, I would recommend the Search and Destroy DVD by Aaron Fisher. Although the routine is taught in the book, I think the DVD gives some very helpful information.Hope this helps:). Also, One Degree by John Guastaferro (book) is going to be released in 2 days.it looks really good too, I had downloaded a sample of it. If anyone has any thoughts on this vs.
Paper Engine? Is the Paper Engine really a must-buy as all the reviews say? I hadn't seen that. AJ was talking about John G. Check out AJ's video of Intuition / Out of the Blue that is posted.
From the table of contents and review I've read, it looks like the effects are arranged into routines (much like Bannon's work). Though at $50 it is a little pricey (Bannon's Dear Mr. Fantasy is only $35 for 197 pages). Interesting Aaron Fisher fact: If you get his DVD 'Search and Destroy' and play that alongside Widespread Panic's 'Light Fuse, Get Away,' THEY LINE UP PERFECTLY.Not really. But wouldn't that be cool?Seriously: Some of the moves will take a bit of work. But that's a good thing, because many of them are great sleights, and anything worth performing is worth practicing.
What makes The Paper Engine one of the better books in my library is the commentary after each trick. This is one of the few books I've read cover to cover without learning every sleight, because it's filled with a lot of great advice. I've also returned to this book several times in developing my own presentations. It's getting pretty dog-eared.
Here's the thing about the perception of skill levels. A total beginner could pick up, say, Expert at the Card Table and work his way through it, slowly, and learn everything well.
Someone could, in theory, get something like 'By Forces Unseen' as their first book, and if they were dedicated, work through it. But it will take them much longer than it would if they'd started with easier material and worked their way up.I think The Paper Engine is a great book for any card worker to have. I have it (signed copy!:D) and I love it. I even took it with me on my trip to Vegas because I was that hooked on it.
I would say every move in there is attainable by anyone that is willing to put the work into learning them. The moves range from quite simple to, 'Wait, I'm supposed to do this, that AND this at the same time?' I'd say get it, read through it at least once without touching a deck of cards, then go back and work on specifics. Be ready to work for a long time on some of those moves. I once asked Fisher if he was going to do a DVD on the Gravity Half Pass, and his response was, 'I don't know, I'm still working on that one.'
As most of you guys have already figured out the real problem is this: There really are only about 5 'beginner's card books out there -That is, books designed to teach beginners what they need to know. The post above makes sense to me - ultimately, you find a book that inspires you not to be a beginner any more. For whatever reason, you find a connection with a book and go for it. Before you know it, you know some of whats in that scary book. Do that 20 more times, and all of a sudden, you're not a beginner at all. You're an intermediate - with more skill and different questions. If you want to learn sleight of hand - that's how it works!
The Paper Engine was designed to be that kind of book - whether or not it succeeds is up to each reader. Hopefully, the essays and thoughts alone teach the student concepts he'll use for the rest of his time in magic! On another note - if you guys haven't subscribed to my new podcast, it's up on itunes for your enjoyment and new episodes start tomorrow - Subscribe now! Also, to the gentlemen who first posted, you'll want to see the free download lesson i put out on the double lift.

The Revolution is a shocking color change. When it was first published in The Paper Engine, it required advanced sleight of hand. Now, Aaron has simplified the sleight so that anyone can perform it. Yet the power of the effect is not lost. That means your magic will look polished and professional sooner than ever before. Plus, you’ll get a peak in to life at Sorcerers Safari Magic Camp in Canada.
There are many lessons on this DVD you can’t learn in a magic shop setting. So we filmed it (mostly) as workshop with Aaron.
The Rising looks like a rework with a simplified handling of the most hard-core trick he taught on his Penguin lecture. Fourtopia looks like it's something that's taught on that same lecture as well, though you get some additional materials on attention management and acquiring a break in the context of the trick. Betrayal (here, I'm totally guessing) may use a sleight from the Paper Engine. Otherwise, I'm not sure.
But it's a very quick, visual effect, one you might use to open a set.For my money, Quadrophenia's worth the purchase of all four. The first transformation looks sharp; the second transformation looks even sharper. They're super cheap right now (before Dec 22), and I love the way Aaron teaches. For me this purchase was a no-brainer.Steven LeungInner circlefound the Magic Rainbow after1558 Posts.
